The debate rages within India for declaring India a Hindu Rashtra. This debate is meaningless. Why? Because since times immemorial, the word Hindu has its roots in 'Himalayas' and 'Indu Sagar' (Indian Ocean) in Sanskrit. 'Hi' from the word Himalayas and 'Indu' from the word Indu Sagar.
Thus, all people living between the Himalayas and the Indu Sagar (Indian Ocean) are called 'Hindus' in Sanskrit. The Islamic invaders in the 9th century called the people living east of the Indus river as Hindus because they could not pronounce the word 'Indu' with an 'i' but with an 'h'. Therefore, all people living between the Himalayas and the Indu Sagar and all people living east of the Indus river are all Hindus. Hindu does not refer to a religion. It refers to a geography. Eighty percent of India's population follow the 'Sanatana Dharma' commonly referred to as Hinduism. There is no need to declare the Indian union as a Hindu Rashtra. Because of you do so, the Muslims in India will demand an Islamic Caliphate, the Sikhs will demand Khalistan, and so on. The idea of India as a Hindu political state is a dangerous discourse, the thought of which, must be expunged at the earliest, once and for all. There is no need to declare India as a Hindu Rashtra. We already are. Don't you realise! Debate closed. Now everybody, get down, get your hands dirty, roll up your sleeves, and build the country.Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah | धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः | Dharma protects the protector. +INDIA ACCELERATING+ (aka अग्रसर भारत) is a public interest blog on India's strategic governance, economy, and security.
